Pena National Palace

The Pena National Palace stands on the top of a hill above the town of Sintra, it constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. King Fernando II acquired a monastery property in ruins around 1838. He then chose a Prussian architect, the Baron Ludwig von Eshwege and the Portuguese Possidonio da Silva. The palace construction started in 1840 and was finished by 1885, the year of the king’s death.

The palace main style is Romantic. The outside looks Medieval and is a beautiful work of art. The inside still has beautiful furniture, china porcelain, and Bohemian lamps. Gothic, Manueline, and Romantic influences make a very explosive combination.

Around the Pena National Palace there is the Park, which has more than 200 hectares and was designed by Ferdinand the II.  Today One of the Seven Wonders of Portugal, the Pena National Palace is a National Monument and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other prominent landmarks near Pena National Palace are Monserrate Palace and Park, Sintra National Palace, Quinta da Regaleira among others extremely pleasant to visit.
