National Ancient Art Museum (Lisbon)
The National Ancient Art Museum is a delight for anyone who loves medieval to mid-19th century art. The Museum has its roots in the 1833 after the abolition of religious orders and confiscation of the monasteries in Portugal.
The Museum of Contemporary Art became the home for all of the nation’s artifacts dated from 1850 to the present. The National Ancient Art Museum took in everything older than what was held in the Museum of Contemporary Art.
In 1940, the Museum expanded with the acquisition of the old convent of Santo Alberto and became connected. The chapel, a fine example of 18th century Portuguese Baroque art and architecture, was incorporated into the exhibition.
The most famous piece is the Saint Vincent Panels painting. This is one of the earliest known collective portraits in Europe, the 60 panels set together forming a whole portrait, painted in the 1470s is extremely important.
The museum is also known as MNAA (in English, National Museum of Ancient Art) and as the Museu das Janelas Verdes (“Museum of the Green Windows”) for its location in the Rua das Janelas Verdes (“Street of the Green Windows”). It occupies the Palácio de Alvor-Pombal, a former palace of the Count of Alvor, later purchased by the Marquess of Pombal.
