Calouste Gulbenkian Museum Foundation

The Foundation displays artwork from as far back as 1860 BC to the early 20th century, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum Foundation is a true treasure in the city of Lisbon, established in 1956 just one year after the philanthropist’s death.

Calouste Gulbenkian was born in 1869 in the Ottoman Empire. During his lifetime, he collected more than 6,000 pieces of artwork. Initially, he thought displaying is collection at the National Gallery in London and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Gulbenkian spent significant time of is life in Paris and London before settling in Lisbon until the end of is life in 1955.

Containing approximately 6,000 pieces, the collection includes ceramics, tapestry, sculpture, paintings, and glassware.

The first circuit is devoted to Classical and Oriental art. Highlights include a Greek vase, Egyptian scarabs, Assyrian bas-reliefs, Roman jewelry, Chinese porcelain, Persian tapestries, and paintings from Japan.

The second circuit, visitors are able to enjoy European art, including 18th century French furniture and paintings and Flemish masters. An entire room is home to jewelry designed by René Lalique.
