Lisbon Commerce Square

The Lisbon Commerce Square has been the place of historical events such like the murder of King Carlos I and is heir D. Luis Filipe, on February 1st, 1908. Arriving to Lisbon the carriage with Carlos I and his family passing through the square, shots were fired from the crowd by at least two men. The king died immediately, his heir Luís Filipe was mortally wounded, and Prince Manuel was hit. The assassins were shot on the spot by members of the bodyguard and later recognized as members of the Republican Party – which two years later overthrew the Portuguese monarchy.

Nowadays a new atmosphere is living on the square with coffee shops and restaurants facing the river. Before and not long ago government closed doors occupied most of the buildings.
